    Hair Styling and Aesthetics . Grade 10 . Open . TXJ2O1
    This introductory course offers students a general overview of the beauty industry. Students will
    learn how to style hair using a variety of methods; rollers, pin curls, blow styling and curling irons.
    Students will also perform manicures, pedicures and a variety of braids. Students gain knowledge,
    skills and insight into the hair industry. Prerequisite: none



    Health Care . Communications/Ethics, Health and Safety . Grade 10 . Open . TPJ2O1
    This course enables students to appreciate what good health is for both themselves and others.
    Emphasis is placed on familiarizing students with physical and mental wellness. Students will gain
    skills in delivery of safe basic care to both adults and children. Prerequisite: none

    Hairstyling and Aesthetics . Grade 11 . Workplace Preparation . TXJ3E1
    Are you a budding Hair Stylista? Do you get SOS calls from your friends when their having a hair
    catastrophe??? If you’ve answered yes to the above questions, we have the course for you! This
    course is an introductory Grade 11 single credit. This course will benefit those students interested in
    obtaining basic professional techniques. Course units will include the following: History of cosmetics,
    intro to hair colour, current marketing trends and cultural norms. Entrepreneurial skills, as related to
    the cosmetics industry, will also be examined. Practical units will include cosmetics and applications,
    and basic colour procedures. While you won’t be quite ready to be “stylist to the Stars”, you will be
    well on your way to understanding professional techniques.
    Prerequisite: TXJ201 recommended, but not required

    Are you the next “stylist to the Stars”? Do you see yourself in a stylish salon surrounded by
    beautiful hair? No need to look any further. We are here to help you accomplish your dreams.
    This intensive course provides you with all the skills needed to pursue a career in Hair
    Design. You will identify trends in hairstyling and aesthetics using industry appropriate
    materials and equipment, and describe scientific and physical processes used in modern
    beauty services. Additionally, this course will focus on environmental issues, health and
    safety laws and explore career opportunities. This course will focus on hair design, but may
    include a combination of both hairstyling and aesthetics. You will also have the opportunity to
    develop your portfolio. Prerequisite: TXJ201 strongly recommended, but not required



    Health Care . Grade 11 . College Preparation . TPJ3C1
    This course focuses on the development of knowledge and skills that will benefit students planning a
    career in the health care field. Students will learn about human anatomy and physiology, homeostasis,
    vital signs, disease prevention and treatment, how lifestyle choices afect health and well-being,
    and conventional and complementary methods of disease prevention and treatment. Students will
    develop an awareness of health and safety issues, environmental and societal issues related to health
    care, and career opportunities in the field. Prerequisite: none

    Child Development and Gerontology . Grade 12 . College Preparation . TOJ4C1
    This course enables students to examine the stages of child development. Students will study the
    processes of disease and factors contributing to health and well-being in early and later life, and
    will develop skills required to meet the needs of children. Students will also learn about legislation
    governing the care of children and older adults; evaluate social and recreational activities, programs,
    and services for improving quality of life; and develop an awareness of health and safety issues,
    environmental and social issues, and career opportunities related to child care and gerontology.
    Prerequisite: none



    Hairstyling and Aesthetics (Cosmetology) . Grade 12 . Workplace Preparation . +CO4EC . 4 credits (including 2 co-op)
    This course builds on the Grade 11 course to provide a solid foundation for students wishing
    to pursue a career in cosmetology. Students will continue to develop practical skills and
    knowledge pertaining to the beauty industry. They will also gain an awareness of the
    entrepreneurial skills required to own and operate a salon. The course will focus on either
    hairstyling, but may include a combination of both hairstyling and aesthetics. In addition
    to the above-mentioned skills, the students may complete a comprehensive portfolio of work
    completed in the areas of hairstyling and/or aesthetics.
    Note: There will be a $10.00 supply fee at the beginning of each semester. This fee will be
    refunded at the end of each semester provided all supplies are promptly returned.
    Prerequisite: Grade 11 Cosmetology, +CO3E0



    Health Care . Grade 12 . College Preparation . TPJ4C1
    This course focuses on the development of clinical skills needed to assess general health status.
    Students will learn about accepted health care practices and about how to perform various basic
    procedures, using appropriate instruments and equipment. They will learn about the human immune
    system, pathology, and disease prevention and treatment. Students will also expand their awareness
    of workers’ health and safety issues, environmental and societal issues related to health care, and
    postsecondary destinations in the field. Prerequisite: TPJ3C1
