    Printing, Electronic Publishing, Digital Photography . Grade 10 . Open . TGJ2O1
    This Communications Technology Course is designed to develop your knowledge and skills in
    Electronic Publishing and the Printing Processes. You will develop and design solutions using project
    based activities, both individually and in small groups. Areas to be covered include; basic typography,
    use of printing and computer terminology, single page layouts, basic image and graphic manipulation,
    digital photography, image editing and enhancement, simple spot and process colour work and
    outputting methods using Macintosh equipment with Quark Xpress and Adobe PhotoShop software.
    Projects may include several black and white and colour advertisements, posters, flyers, and business
    cards suitable for publication. The study of layout and design principles will allow you to produce
    individual and unique pieces. You will design and produce a T-shirt design that will be put into
    production and printed using the Screen Printing method. All this will provide you with a clear and
    better understanding of the printing and publishing industry, so that you can be better informed for
    your senior Technology Studies choices. Prerequisite: none

    Audio . Grade 11 . University/College Preparation . TGR3M1
    Are you interested in becoming a recording engineer, public address technician, sound effects
    specialist, TV/radio studio technician, disk jockey/operator, announcer, or film sound editor/
    designer? Then this may be the one for you! The audio course was developed for those who want
    to cultivate general knowledge and skill in the production of effective audio communications. Upon
    successful completion, you will have a working knowledge of how to capture and modify sound in
    a live or studio setting. Topics covered range from the physics of sound, microphone choice and
    placement, to sound editing and final mix-down in both live and studio settings, and work safety.
    You will be able to follow accepted industry standards for either live or recorded sound. You will use
    Sound Studio and Garage Band Software to create your projects. As a compulsory component of this
    course, students will be members of the “stage crew”, who work in live production of sound in the
    Auditorium during assemblies and special events. Prerequisite: none

    Graphic Arts . Grade 11 . College/University Preparation . +PR3M0 (2 credits)
    Are you interested in Graphic Design? Are you thinking of becoming a Graphic Designer? If you
    answered yes to these questions, then you should be taking this fast-paced introductory 2
    credit Graphic Design package. In this program you will learn the basics of graphic design
    and layout using the industry standard page layout programs, Quark, Adobe Indesign and
    Illustrator. You will also learn the basics of photography and use high–end digital SLR
    cameras to take photographs and then manage, catalog, edit and manipulate the images using
    Adobe Photoshop and Bridge. You will design and print, advertisements, calendars, posters and
    booklets, and will learn about the different methods of printing and how to properly prepare your
    design for printing. Prerequisite: TGJ2O1 recommended, but not required

    Interactive New Media and Animation Grade 11 . University/College Preparation . TGI3M1
    This course examines communications systems and design and production processes as it applies
    to the Internet. Students will develop knowledge and skills relating to the assembly, operation,
    maintenance, and repair of the basic and more complex components of a range of communications
    systems. Students will also study industry standards and regulations and health and safety issues,
    and will explore careers, the importance of lifelong learning, and the impact of communications
    technology on society and the environment. Prerequisite: ICS2O1 recommended, but not required

    Photography and Digital Imaging Grade 11 . University/College Preparation . TGP3M1
    This is a fun, photo-assignment oriented course that builds on the skills and knowledge in the grade
    11 course, and will help prepare you for the communications industry. This course is a practical,
    integrated activity subject where you will use cameras and lenses as tools to accumulate a year-end
    portfolio of photography. Using different lighting techniques and darkroom processes, your photos
    will be conceptually executed; thus building knowledge, skills, and values. Prerequisite: none

    Photojournalism . Grade 11 . University/College Preparation . TGJ3M1
    Do you want to work on the school yearbook? Do you like taking photographs? Are you interested in
    Graphic Design? If you answered yes to these questions then you should be taking this introductory
    communications course. In this course you will learn the basics of photography, digital image
    manipulation, and layout and design, while working on the production of school yearbook. Using
    high–end digital SLR cameras you will take photographs and learn how to manage, catalog, edit and
    manipulate the images using Adobe Photoshop and Bridge. You will then learn the basics of graphic
    design and layout using the industry standard page layout program, Adobe Indesign, and use the
    photographs to design and prepare layouts for the school yearbook. Prerequisite: none

    Printing & Graphic Communication . Desktop Publishing Grade 11 . University/College Preparation . TGG3M1
    Are you interested in Graphic Design? Are you thinking of becoming a Graphic Designer? If you

    TV, Video and Movie Production . Grade 11 . University/College Preparation . TGV3M1
    “Lights, camera, action!” The Grade 11 Video production class is where you will acquire all the skills
    and knowledge used to create a video or movie. You will explore the technical and operations side
    of the industry, which includes lighting theory, lighting/grip, camera operation, tripods, digital
    theory, electrical/gaffer, shot type and structure, recording methods, media, audio, microphone
    use, storyboarding, scriptwriting, and design. You will also study industry regulations, and health
    and safety issues. You explore careers, the importance of lifelong learning, and the impact of
    communications technology on society and the environment. In this program you will assist the
    “stage crew” with associated technical functions as part of the curriculum. You will use small video
    projects in the classroom setting to build their skill base in the program along with the use of Corel
    software to design their own DVD cover. Prerequisite: none

    Graphic Arts . Grade 12 . College/University Preparation . +PR4M0 . 2 credits
    In this program you will begin to develop the skills you will need to become a Graphic Designer
    and build a portfolio that can be used when applying to a Graphic Design program at
    the college or university level. Students will use industry standard desktop publishing
    programs (Quark XPress, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) to design and
    create products for print such as: logos, business cards, ads, magazines, newspapers,
    and packaging. Students will work on the live production, layout and design of the school
    newspaper and yearbook. You will also learn the fundamentals of photography using digital SLR
    cameras to capture and enhance photographic images that will be used in the design process.
    In addition the different methods of printing and how to prepare digital files for print will be
    studied. Students will also have the opportunity to print the products they design using offset
    lithographic printing presses.

    Interactive New Media and Animation Grade 12 . College/University Preparation . TGI4M1
    This course examines communications systems and design and production as it applies to the
    Internet. Students will create, manage, and distribute complex electronic, graphic, recorded, or audio-
    visual projects independently and in project teams. Students will also study industry standards and
    regulations and health and safety issues, and will explore careers, the importance of lifelong learning,
    and the impact of communications technology on society and the environment. Topics include, but
    are not limited to, Macromedia Flash with action scripts, Dreamweaver web page design,
    Java Script and plug-ins, Shockwave applications used in animation, Hardware control
    using Embedded Internet, Network protocols ie:TCP/IP, POP, STMP AND FTP, Commercial
    Web design using PHP and Perl scripts. Prerequisite: TGI3M1

    Photography and Digital Imaging . Grade 12 . College/University Preparation . TGP4M1
    This course examines communications systems and production processes in the areas of electronic,
    live, recorded, and graphic communications. This course is a practical integrated activity subject that
    will focus on black and white still photography. Individually, and in groups, the students will use the
    camera and enlarger as a tool to accumulate a year-end portfolio of photography. Using different
    lighting techniques and the darkroom process, student photos will be conceptually executed building
    knowledge, skills and values. This is a fun, photo-assignments oriented course that will help prepare
    the student for the communications industry. Prerequisite: TGP3M1

    Are you thinking of applying to a college/university level Graphic Design program? Well this
    advanced level communications course will help you prepare a portfolio and build on your graphic
    design skills as you produce the school yearbook. Students will build on the basic communication
    skills acquired in the introductory course and will develop advanced level skills in Adobe Photoshop,
    Bridge, and Indesign. You will also learn advanced level photographic techniques for capturing
    and managing photographs, as well as build on your layout and design skills as you create industry
    standard, quality page layouts for the CTS Vulcan yearbook. Prerequisite: TGJ3M1

    Television, Video and Movie Production Grade 12 . College/University Preparation . TGV4M1
    This course examines communications systems and design and production processes in the areas of
    electronic, live, recorded, and graphic communications. Students will create, manage, and distribute
    complex electronic, graphic, recorded, or audio-visual projects independently and in project teams.
    Students will also study industry standards and regulations and health and safety issues, and will
    explore careers, the importance of lifelong learning, and the impact of communications technology
    on society and the environment. The main focus will be on producing a short mini promotional video
    which includes story boarding, scripting, refinement of shooting techniques, operation, set up, and
    final packaging of the video. Students will use both analog and computer based digital hardware/
    software to help them assemble the final production. Prerequisite: TGV4M1
